McCARTHY of California. I thank my colleagues for yielding, and I
share their concern on this important matter. I want to ensure my
colleagues that enacting an extension of the Secure Rural Schools
program is going to be an early priority for next year.
Madam Speaker, as the gentlewoman knows, in September of last year, the House passed H.R. 1526, the Restoring Healthy Forests for Healthy Communities Act, which would have allowed us to better manage our Federal forests for the benefit of our rural schools and [[Page H9069]] counties. Unfortunately, the Senate was unable to act on this bill or to find a way forward on this important issue.
I believe, in the next Congress, we should find a path forward to get this important matter across the finish line, and I will work with our colleagues and with incoming Chairman Bishop to make sure that this happens. We need to get this done, and we need to get it done early next year.
